Storybook Saturday
The Roman Empire

"Veni, vidi, vici."
 I came. I saw. I conquered.

It's Saturday! Time for a new week of Storybook Saturday. This week's theme is the Roman Empire, which expanded throughout the reaches of Europe to the Middle East. I was inspired to do this challenge after visiting the numerous role-play SIMs in Second Life revolving around ancient times, including the Isle of Pandateria - also known as Ventotene.

There are many wonderful things in SL revolving around ancient times, including housing prefabs, costuming, decor. The dress I'm wearing from GSpot is available at the latest round of We <3 RP. Also, if you really want to get a good look at an interpretation of Rome, check out HBO's Rome because it's absolutely stunning. Special thanks to my friend Julia Caesaris Minor for posing with me!

Defender of the Realm

We <3 RP has recently unveiled a new round of fantastic items for the story tellers of Second Life. You can find all sorts of goodies from homes and decor to armor and accessories. I'm currently wearing the chainmail shirt and bracers from Maxwell Graf's 'Bitch' line. The doublet has materials in it! So take a look on the LL viewer if you can.

Galactic Beauty

Here is my inspiration of for my Storybook Saturday! I've always loved the Twi'lek race of the Star Wars lore. Return of the Jedi is the first memory I have of seeing a movie in the movie theater, and even though I was really young, I think the scene of Oola and Jabba always left an impression on my child's brain. Here's some Twi'lek info from the 'official' Wookiepedia:

Twi'leks (pronounced /'twilÉ›k/), sometimes referred to disparagingly as"Tail-heads", were an omnivorous humanoid species originating from the planet Ryloth. They tended to eat cultivated molds, fungi, and rycritmeat. Their distinctive features included colorful skin, which varied in pigment from individual to individual, and a pair of shapely prehensile tentacles that grew from the base of their skulls. The tentacles, called "brain-tails", "lekku", "tchun-tchin", or "head-tails" were advanced organs used for communication and cognitive functions. Twi'leks possessed a fairly standard humanoid vocal structure and were capable of learning most alien languages; however, they usually preferred their native language of Ryl, which incorporated subtle movement of the lekku. When they wished, they could even communicate in complete secrecy using their versatile brain-tails. Twi'lek females were often used as slaves or dancers because of their beauty.

Did you know that there's a new Star Wars SIM opening? I didn't! It's called New Alderaan & Bakura. I'm told from one of the SIM owners that the official opening of the city 'New Alderaan' opens on this coming Tuesday, but the capital 'Bakura' is still under construction. There are many faction groups to join - everything from the galactic army to the seedy doings of the cantinas. If you want to look around, here is your taxi.

See His Ship a' Sailin'

"...if I ever sail from olde Ireland,
you'll mind that I not leave you behind."

Great news! FATEwear designer and ColdLogic collaborator Damien Fate has branched out into something very exciting - Role Play! I talk about Role Play often on my blog because I am a roleplayer in SL. I am very excited about this next project from Damien Fate. The dress I am wearing now is called the 'Wende' dress. It comes in a variety of colors as well as my favorite color - Fatpack. The great thing about this gown is that it comes in three parts. The sleeves are optional, the bodice is it's own piece as well as the skirt. This means you can swap out skirts and bodies in order to make a unique look.

I've been seeing so much lovely fantasy and RP things on the grid lately that I'm almost tempted to do a blogger challenge. Maybe Storybook Saturday?

I needed to find a place to take my blog picture here. I was going to go atypical medieval, but as I was wandering around Maxwell Graf's Rustica, I saw the amazing mesh ships in the backdrop from where I stood. Instantly I was reminded of the song 'Kellswater', with my favorite rendition being sung by Loreena McKennitt.

The Isle of Pandateria

I would guess that the most popular draw of Second Life is the role play community. I first learned of Second Life back when it first came out from the Gorean AOL group I used to play with, but I didn't join Second Life until 2010 - for RP. Pandateria is a new ancient times RP SIM, centered around, you guessed it, the Isle of Pandateria.

Pandateria is also known as Ventotene, which was an isle made of the ancient remains of a volcano. Ventotene was a place of exile; a prison of sorts for nobles and commoners alike.

From the WikiPandataria is best known as the island to which the emperor Augustus banished his daughter Julia the Elder in 2 BC, as reaction to her excessive adultery, where she was to spend five years, and to which Tiberius banished his grandniece Agrippina the Elder in 29 AD. She perished, probably of malnutrition, on October 18, 33 AD. After Agrippina's son Gaius (better known as Caligula) became emperor in 37 AD, he went to Pandataria to collect her remains and reverently brought them back to Rome. Agrippina's youngest daughter, Julia Livilla was also exiled to Pandateria twice: the first time by her brother Caligula for plotting to depose him and the next time by her uncle, the emperor Claudius, at the instigation of his wife, Messalina, in 41 AD. Sometime later, she was discreetly starved to death there and her remains were probably brought back to Rome when her sisterAgrippina the Younger became influential as the emperor's wife. Another distinguished lady of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, Claudia Octavia, who was the first wife of the emperor Nero, was banished to Pandateria in 62 AD and executed on the orders of her husband.

Pandateria was a vacation destination for Roman elite, but the isle proved to be too inhospitable for residence due to it's steady commerce of pirates and it's exposure to the sea. "Life on Pandateria was harsh.  There was little there. A prison, a few vacation villas and the sea. Nothing more."

The Second Life setting of this place in history takes off from the 37 AD, after Caligula collected Julia's remains. It boasts a small village, a few villas, a prison, and a den for the pirates. The build of the SIM is extensive, perfect with it's detail, and inspires the imagination. Players of Pandateria can choose from several 'classes', including citizens born to the isle, exiles, pirates, and prisoners. If you are interested in joining the brand new Role Play community, than check it out. Notecards on the different roles as well as a history of Pandateria are available at the welcome area.

Keliah Angelis

My first love in Second Life was role playing. I'm a huge fan of this type of game. It's not nearly the same as playing a video game, where the story is set out for you to discover. This is far different - you're telling a story. At the same time, you are telling stories with other folks who have the same love as you: love for a good story.

This is how I got my SL name in fact. Keliah Angelis was a character from my own comic books that me and my pot-smoking teenage friends conjured up, though her tale was very brief and that time of my life dissolved away into adulthood - but the character was a cocky-red-head-warrior-princess-bitch-with-chainmail-but-not-Red-Sonia type.

Later on, I started a forum with some German friends based off of World of Darkness. I played a different character, Keliah being only a rudimentary part of the tale. The forum went on for awhile and I had a lot of fun, and when I finally decided to resurrect Keliah into second life, I found the perfect place for her: Ravenhurst.

Ravenhurst has since changed, the story now New Raven City - an offshot city of Detroit, Michigan, which is now controlled by the Vampire Authority Council. It's a dark town full to the brim with vampires, werewolves, witches, gypsies, and fae. Human's to. Can't forget the humans.

I've been so lacking in my blog posts lately because of this rebuild and I expect my upcoming week to be just as busy as we continue to erect Raven City. Stop on by and have a look at the new SIM if you will. Interested in playing? Fill out an application.

I Think I'm Turning Japanese..
Contributed by Xomar Mycron

Xomar back for another unnecessary fashion post. What's that, you say? I don't look like Xomar? Well, this true. Actually, there is so much concentrated awesomeness within me that had I attempted to bottle it all inside just one avatar...we're talking the equivalent of a star collapsing on itself and sucking all of Second Life into a black hole of nothingness. I couldn't bear to be the destruction of the internet's most popular fake clothing shop outside of World of Warcraft, so I've been known to create a few alts. They actually come in pretty handy for roleplaying...and you know, hiding for psychopathic exes.

*Waves to his psychopathic exes*

Meet Jubei, my Japanese vampiric Yakuza boss who runs a club within the realm of Raven City, formerly Ravenhurst. His story is quite the tapestry of intrigue and adventure, but I'm not going to tell you about that. I know; that would be way more interesting than what I'm wearing, but sorry, blog rules and all. Send all complaints to Tits McGee.

Bare Rose was one of the first shops I discovered in Second Life when I joined...holy shit, it's been 6 years!? What have I been doing with my life?!

*sobs in the corner for an hour*

Sorry, where was I? Oh, right, Bare Rose has long been a source for inventive and extremely affordable outfits, geared more towards roleplay fantasy and sci fi wear. I'd say high quality too, but, well, it's sort of hit or miss, really. However, with prices from 150-200 Linden for complete outfits, you'll rarely feel like you were ripped off like you would from other shops. It seems they've finally gotten into the Mesh game and so far I'm rather impressed.

As I mentioned, they're very good for various RP outfits, especially if you're looking for any sort of Japanese/Anime appearance. I decided to go with the samurai because, let's face it, samurais are awesome. I know some people will go on about ninjas, but samurais have always had a soft spot in my heart since I read Shogun back in Jr. High. Their code of honor, known as bushido, was so powerful that they had the will to commit suicide, or seppuku in the name of their lord or daimyo to defend it. Of course, most of it is bullshit, historical revisionism during World War II in order to push forward on their drive to conquer all of Asia, but it's still pretty bad ass. Plus, Star Wars is basically a rip off of a samurai movie by the great Japanese director Kurosawa, The Hidden Fortress. So, it has that going for it, too. Everyone loves Star Wars...at least until Lucas ruined it with the prequels and than set fire to the legacy of Indiana Jones. But I digress which is distracting me from getting a refill. Sayonara, peeps.

Ahoy, Me Hearties!
Contributed by Xomar Mycron

Ahoy, ya land lubbers! Captain Xomar back for 'nother round of sartorial nonsense for the beauty with the most impressive treasure chests that keeps the wind a blowin' and the grog a flowin', Keliah. Speaking of which, I think I need some alcohol.

*heads into the bowels of his ship and fiddles with his bunghole.*

Alright, where were we? Oh, right, it's talk like a pirate day and I'm already exhausted with the silliness of it all, Especially since pirates didn't talk anywhere near like they do in the movies. Nor did they actually make people walk the plank or bury treasure to be found by later generations of Goonies to save their towns from development. In fact, almost every cool thing that pirates are associated with is all bullshit. Why are they so popular, I hear nobody asking? I'm going to go with their fashion sense. Peg legs, eye patches, and puffy shirts make quite the statement.

Now, I've been many things in SL, Russian spy, asshole, vampire, giant asshole, Gorean outlaw, unrepentant asshole, but pirate is one of my favorites. Unfortunately, there haven't been a lot of quality swag for pirating over the years. However, with the magic of mesh, I've found what has to be the best pirating get up amongst the seven seas...of Marketplace. The store Snatched created by Braydon Randt, an old acquaintance from my Gor days (ZAO represent!), has this awesome outfit simply called Buccaneer. It comes in several different colors; I'm wearing the natural version with a basic white shirt/brown pants combination. If there's anything to complain about this item aside from the laughably bad mesh beard (have they made a beard yet that doesn't look like you skinned a Loraxx and glued it to your face? if so, I haven't seen it) is the fact that your midsection is rather, uh, meaty. Let's just say you'll feel like maybe you should cut back on the grog and start jogging or something.

Either way, get in the spirit and strike a jaunty pose on a barrel before yer keelhauled, ye scallywags!

White Roses

I was so disappointed in Mon Tissu's latest release of mesh jeans - because not all avatars have the tiny, skinny legs, the squashed, tiny ass, and a set up hips that are so fucking wide...okay, sorry. I'm ranting. Mon Tissu, could you make a mesh for us regularly shaped avatars? Meanwhile, I've been working on my photo studio. Gathering textures here, making prims there. Finding suitable props. Messing with my poses. Then I came across the pose I got from Captivity Co. and I was inspired to do a little photo shoot. I don't have actual talender flowers, but I have these white roses. High res shots available in my Deviant Art.

The talender, fixed in her hair, is a slave girl’s wordless confession,

which, commonly, she dares not speak, that she cares for her Master.
